LEARNING ABOUT PATTERNS

LEARNING ABOUT PATTERNS

BY: MRS. AMANDA ELSWICK

pp1In math the Dolphins have been talking about patterns.  They have learned to identify and create 2 color patterns and 2 shape patterns. A pattern is only a pattern, if it is repeated two or more times.

pp2

They have learned a few “key words” so that they can identify, recognize and create patterns. The “key words” are:  pattern; repeats itself two or more times and over and over again.

pp3The children used various manipulatives as part of the lesson to create patterns.  In preschool, identifying and creating patterns are just the beginning steps of the mastery of life-long mathematical skills.

Patterning is a basic math skill upon which many mathematic concepts are based.  Multiplication, Addition and Skip Counting all require an understanding of patterning.

pp4So take the time with your child and discover patterns and how they work through your child’s understanding of what he/she learned in the classroom.  See if your child can create his/her own pattern.  You will be pleasantly surprised at what your child can do!
