What is matter?

What is matter?

By Mrs. Kathy Johnson, 1A Teacher

First graders learned a new science word this month . . . Matter.  They learned that everything around them is called matter and that matter is anything that occupies space such as solids and liquids.  They discovered what “dissolve” meant by observing and predicting how some solids mix with liquids such as salt and water and sugar and water.  They also discovered that some liquids are thick such as ketchup and can dissolve quickly in water, but that thick oil and water definitely do not mix!  Ending the unit on matter, students enjoyed changing a solid object into another shape and size by creating pipe cleaner stick figures..
