Understanding Friction

Understanding Friction
By Mrs. Susana Kwock

frictionThe fourth grade scientists have been hard at work understanding force. A force is a push or pull. The fourth graders performed an experiment to see how friction can slow down an object in motion.

They pulled a box with books in it across five different surfaces: the tabletop, the tabletop covered with a table cloth, a carpet, the floor of their classroom, and the cement outside of their classroom.

They had attached a spring scale to the box of books to measure the force in newtons to make their comparisons. Experiments are a fun way to learn science!
